Here's a picture of Dad with his bday cake in Boston. He turned the big 72!!
It's official, we're going to celebrate Dad's bday in MD with Nancy and Brandon on an annual basis. I realized we've spent the last 3-4 years there. Again, it's still bittersweet but less so than last year. I still feel Mom's presence in every room of their house. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I picked my Dad up from Chinatown and he looked so tired. And yes, he's up watching chinese movies til 3-4am or out playing MJ with his buddies. But he sighed and said he can't sleep cos he still thinks about Mom.
It's also funny because we moved Mom's bed to my grandmother's apt at Tai Tung in Chinatown three months ago. We thought he could stay there if he is out late at his club. But he hasn't stayed over yet and now we find out it's because he feels strange and worries that he would think about my mom sleeping in her bed. Maybe I'll have to buy him a new bed? So we kinda started this tradition of celebrating my parents' bdays in MD with Nancy and Brandon a few years ago. Last year was the 1st time without her. It was hard and so bittersweet and I was dreading this year again. But due to unforeseen circumstances, my Dad and I had to delay our trip. Will be heading to MD next week.
Instead we celebrated by having dinner at home. Dad seemed a little subdued tonight. He didn't want to go to cemetery?! So Norm and I went and replanted some new mums as the ones I planted last month were already dying. I also added some solar powered lanterns. Not sure if they actually work yet. Maybe one of these nights, I'll drive by to see. Surprisingly, I am not focusing on the fact that she is not here but on her smile. And how happy she was when we were eating her bday cake! I'll always have those memories. |
