Surviving Orlando with Dad

10/31/2016

Just got back from Florida with Dad. We met Nancy there and thank goodness she came along! Don't get me wrong, my Dad isn't that bad for an old 75 year old. She kept him company - she also agreed to stay in the same room cos they both snore.

For our first park, we went to Animal Kingdom. Dad refused to sit in a wheelchair having no concept of how big the park is. He put on a brave face but we knew he was tired. We stopped alot so he can rest. And yes, we hit all of the smoking sections.  We ended up at urgent care cos he had what looked like a rash on both of his legs from his ankles up to his knees. Luckily he is alright, broken red blood cells from standing too much.

2nd park - Epcot for the International Food and Wine Festival! We learned our lesson and rented a wheelchair. He really enjoyed it - we went on a simulated ride and he said it was exciting! We pretty much ate our way through. So good.

3rd park - SeaWorld. Not much to add here. Dad did enjoy the Orca whales, dolphins and sea lion shows. But there's also a reason why I haven't gone in almost 25 years!

His favorite part of the whole trip was the Lion King show at Animal Kingdom. Also typical chinaman mentality, when petting the dolphin he was thinking shark fins soup. So who knows what else he was thinking of when he was eyeing the other animals. All in all, I'm glad we took him. Never in a million years would he have gone with us 10 years ago. He would have been bitching about everything and refusing to do anything. But now he is patient and so easygoing.  See pics!

Reunion

A friend of mine organized this reunion party last night. And there was supposed to be disco music for dancing! She's originally from Brookline so I was thinking the majority of the people attending would also be from there.. This would totally be something I would drag Helen to - my security blanket. So wasn't sure if I wanted to go solo. But my friend offered to pick me up so I wouldn't walk in by myself! I know, what a pussy!

I did forward the flyer to another friend of mine but didn't hear back. I then decided yesterday that I didn't want to go so early and should probably drive myself in the event I wanted to leave early. So yes, I was a little late, missed dinner but I walked in myself thinking I wouldn't know anyone. And to my surprise, i did know people. People I haven't seen in over 30 years! Plus my friend who I forwarded the flyer to showed up. Scary that the majority of people were in their 50s and 60s. A few young'uns in the 40s. Man, where did time go?

Overall, it was a great event. The consensus was that we need to do another one. If 85 people will trek all the way to Holliston, how many people will go to an event in Boston? I think alot of the people are empty-nesters and am now available to go out without worrying about kids and babysitters.

Good times! And now preparing for my trip to Disney World with Dad and Nancy!

Wow Mom, it's your 70th birthday!

Happy Birthday, Mom!! Jeez, just ten years ago we surprised you with a party. Your two brothers from HK, sister and brother from NYC and Nancy & Brandon from MD came to celebrate with you. And of course, Dad's brothers and their families were there as well. It seems like it was so long ago. But it was an amazing time had by all.

Dad is in MD with Nancy & Brandon. They're celebrating your birthday today by buying your favorite cake from Whole Foods. So did I but from Daniels! I know you're celebrating with your parents, Irene, Wingo. And I also know Helen is there with her tupperware to take the leftovers!

Planning my trip with my Dad and Nancy to Disney World in a couple of weeks. And I have to say I'm pretty pumped up about it, strange as it may seem! We're planning on hitting Epcot Center, Animal Kingdom and Sea World! We'll try and take it easy on Dad cos it's going to be a lot of walking.

Otherwise, life goes on. Work is the same but getting busier because it's coming up on year end. My family are all doing well. Still talk to Mom and Hel on a daily basis. See pics of my little alter to them. I light two incense sticks every morning.

Who is still reading this crazy blog? it would be so helpful if someone can comment so I know who my audience is!

"Focus on being amazing"

That's the message I got from my horoscope today. Tho recently, I've received news that can be construed as hurtful if I allow it. And of course, I start thinking damn, when is this going to stop? How much more can my soul handle? The past 4 years since my Mom has passed haven't been easy and definitely a killer to my sense of well-being. But I keep thinking Mom would never let this happen to her and she's always had this unwavering faith in me. So I keep clinging to those thoughts and that's what keeps me going.

And coincidentally
my horoscope is telling me almost the same thing my Mom would advise:
"It’s the beginning of a brand new cycle for you today, Sagittarius, and you are feeling like this one is going to be a great one. The Sagittarius Moon in your first house has you feeling like you are on top of the world and can conquer anything! And you can, if you really put your mind to that today. Focus on an area that makes your sense of Self and Self-worth feel amazing.
"

I've been waiting for a sign from my Mom and maybe this is it???

I'm fortunate enough to have an awesome job at a biotech company. I'm also blessed to have the bestest of friends in the world - from Castle Square, ATASK, and Jamie Club - you know who you are! Last but not least, I have a family that are always there for me.

Because of all the people in my life, awesome opportunities have come my way - working and volunteering in the community. I hope to continue that work with a little help from my friends.
