China - 4th Uncle's House

Part of our plan for our trip was to visit 4th Uncle's house in Guanzhou in China. He bought this house to get away from the city and to live in a peaceful and calm environment.

Rob and I planned on going for a couple days just to hang out with my parents and Uncles. But we made a detour to buy some "fake" stuff at Sum Jun which is a city right outside the border.  Basically, a it was a mall where you can choose anything you want (belts, handbags, wallets, luggage, etc) from catalogs! We spent about 3-4 hours there and barely made it to the last bus to Guanzhou. My poor Aunt May was fretting alot but we made it. It was about a 3-hour bus ride but pretty uneventful.

After the bus ride, we ended up at some late night restaurant. The bathrooms were typical - a hole in the floor where your squatting skills come into play. Hey, when you have to go you have to go! But it would be better if the signs had the girl/boy icons on it as Rob and I don't read Chinese. No big deal as Rob went into the girl's bathroom. Luckily there wasn't anyone in there. Though a woman did a double take when heading in and Rob walked out! Then there were the roaches....but again no big deal. Just our 1st night in China!

Uncle's house was amazing, a tri-level with 6 bedrooms and 6 baths. It was in a security guarded estates but once you leave the gated community, it was a whole different story. The poverty was well showcased and I know I have a lot ot be thankful for. But the people seem to be happy.....but maybe I'm just being naive.

I'm fortunate enough to have an awesome job at a biotech company. I'm also blessed to have the bestest of friends in the world - from Castle Square, ATASK, and Jamie Club - you know who you are! Last but not least, I have a family that are always there for me.

Because of all the people in my life, awesome opportunities have come my way - working and volunteering in the community. I hope to continue that work with a little help from my friends.
